We all miss going to the salon for our weekly pamper sessions. Not only can you pay to get your scalp tendered to by a professional, but the in-salon treatments refresh your mane, leaving them feeling lighter and rejuvenated. But what if we told you that you can achieve the same results at home, without spending a penny? Yep, it’s possible — with a simple tea rinse!
Teas are rich in caffeine and tannins (two compounds that you may not get from any other source), that can help maintain a healthy scalp. Depending on the tea you use, tea rinses can help nourish dry hair, strengthen them, promote new hair growth and even alleviate dryness. So, if we have piqued your curiosity for tea rinses, here are some things you need to know about them…
How do tea rinses benefit your hair?

You already know that most teas are loaded with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antibacterial properties. Black and green teas also consist of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that can help get rid of scalp dryness and inhibit hair fall. Some of the major benefits of tea rinses are:
- Moisturises hair - Green tea is rich in vitamin B5 variant called panthenol. It’s a potent hydrating agent that is often used in hair conditioners and creams. Green tea, thus, can help moisturiser dry and dehydrated hair without much effort.
- Promotes hair growth - When used topically, the polyphenol content in green tea can help disinfect and nourish your scalp to promote healthy hair growth. Tea rinses can also help soothe and calm inflamed scalps, and promote cell rejuvenation to inhibit hair fall and boost new hair growth.
- Adds shine to dull hair - In addition to helping with scalp health, tea rinse can also help add shine to dull and tired-looking hair. Nutrient-rich teas can also strengthen weak hair to arrest breakage and give it a glossy finish.
How to do a tea rinse at home

Tea rinses can be done once a week and are easy to prepare as well. Start by brewing your choice of green or black tea (unflavoured and unsweetened) in boiling water for five minutes, and set it aside to cool. Shampoo and condition your hair, preferably with a detoxifying formula like the TRESemmé Botanique Nourish and Replenish Shampoo and Conditioner. Pour your brewed tea in a spray bottle and spritz it all over your wet hair. Leave it on for 30-45 minutes and cover your head with a shower cap. Rinse off with cold water when done.
