Is the Curly Girl Method the secret to gorgeous curls?

On good hair days, women with curly hair look as happy as their bouncy and shiny curls. But on most days you will find them trying to taming frizz, fighting damage or simply begging their tresses to behave. It’s no secret that curly hair has a mind of its own, which is why the Curly Girl Method (CG) is here, to avoid the madness that comes along with this hair type.

What is the Curly Girl Method?

Don’ts:

Lorraine Massey, a woman who was probably tired of her crazy curls came up with the Curly Girl Method. In her book ‘Curly Girl: The Handbook’ Massey explains how to maximise natural waves and curls by training your hair to fall into its natural curl pattern. It quickly became a thing and a lot of people found it helpful.

If you want to know everything about the CG method, here are all the dos and don’ts from the guide:

Dos:

Don’ts:

Cleanse – Massage the scalp gently using your fingertips. However, the CG method recommends cleansing hair once a week or every 10 days.

Condition – Section hair and coat with conditioner as you normally do but don’t wash it off completely, leave on a protective layer.

Style – Use a soft towel or an old t-shirt to plop your curls and after 15-30 minutes remove the towel and allow it to air dry. To accentuate the curls, rub a little bit of oil between your palms and scrunch your hair.

Don’ts:

Don’ts:

Silicones – Keep silicones away from your hair as much as possible. Steer clear of sulfates and SLS as these ingredients cause serious dryness. Read the ingredients on the packaging to understand what the product contains.

Combs and brushes – Do you have a count of all the brushes and combs you had to throw out because your curls killed them cold-heartedly? Well, guess what, it’s time to say goodbye to styling tools forever.

Heat styling tools – Heat styling tools can be quite damaging for your hair, especially for curly hair type. The CG method is all about embracing and enhancing natural curls, therefore avoid using heat styling tools. Start by using them less often and with time give up on them completely.

What’s more, if you don’t have curly hair but want to protect your hair from damage you can still use this method.
