How to recreate Mariah Carey’s signature ringlets from the 90s

90s hairstyles have made a roaring comeback in 2020.

From laying down baby hair in pretty swirls or crimping tresses to submission, millennials are riding the nostalgia wave. And one of our personal favourites has to do with showing love to OTT, big hair - early 90s ringlets. Imitating the look of a perm without actually having to get one, this hairstyle was pioneered by none other than R&B diva, Mariah Carey.

How To:

Mariah’s signature ringlets were so iconic that her first album cover featuring that hair has become one of the most recognisable images in music. And we understand the fascination with the voluminous hairstyle — girls with naturally curly hair can rock it with ease and the ones in need of some dramatic body in their mane have a good excuse to do it. Because hey, Mariah (and now even Zendaya) did it!

We can already feel you getting excited about trying the look, so here is a step-by-step guide to recreating this iconic look…

How To:

How To:

Step 01: Start by thoroughly washing and conditioning your hair. The key to getting ringlets in your tresses is hydration and a formula like the Love Beauty & Planet Anti Frizz Combo will keep any flyways in chek.

Step 02: Prep your still wet mane with the TIGI Bed Head On The Rebound Curl Recall Cream. Infused with glycerine, the products help maintain nourished and defined ringlets for up to 72 hours.

Step 03: To get open, bouncy ringlets, take 1 cm wide action of your hair and put them in self-holding foam roller sticks. If you are going for heatless curls, you can sleep in your rollers and take them out in the morning. But if you are styling for an event, leave the rollers in for about an hour and blow dry on high temperature and low speed. If you are using heat to set the curls, make sure to use a heat protectant spray before heat styling.

Step 04: While taking out the foam rollers, start from the bottom, near the nape of your neck and work upwards. Once all of the rollers are out, pick at each section and open them up. Just casually run your hands through the ringlets to open them up and give a bouncy finish. Set with some hairspray aaaand you’re done!
