Everything you need to know about silicone in skincare

Ever wondered why some of your skincare products such as primer, serum and BB cream feel so soft and smooth on the skin? Silicone is the answer! Silicone is one of the most common ingredients found in your everyday beauty products. Derived from silica, silicones are semi-liquid substances that act as a barrier, making your skin resistant to both air and water.

Thanks to its velvety texture, silicone-infused products are always easy-to-apply and leave your skin looking plump, fresh and smooth. And that’s not all! Silicones have healing properties and at the same time, help prevent moisture loss. Nonetheless, it has its own downsides too.

So, is it safe to use silicone in your skincare, you ask? Read on to find out.

Pros

Cons

#01: Heals scars: Silicone contains big molecules which help protect the skin from damage. It heals acne scars and prevents excessive dryness, leaving the skin highly moisturised.

#02: Keeps environmental aggressors at bay: You’ll be happy to know that silicone keeps your skin protected from harmful environmental aggressors such as gunk, grime, dust and pollution. If your skin is not prone to frequent breakouts, then silicone-infused products will work well for you.

#03: Locks in moisture: Silicone can be a saviour for dry-skinned beauties. When the molecules in silicone form a barrier over your skin, they tend to lock in moisture and prevent moisture loss, making your skin look well-nourished and hydrated.

Cons

Cons

#01: Messes with product layering: While silicone-based products make application of the following products much easier, it tends to block other ingredients from penetrating the skin. Silicone sits on the skin’s surface and acts as a protective barrier, making the application of other skincare products pretty useless. Therefore, it’s best to use a silicone-infused product as the last step in your routine.

#02: It’s not easy to wash off: Silicone can prove to be a stubborn ingredient. It won’t wash off easily in one go. If you’re using a silicone-based product, then make sure you either double-cleanse or use cleansing oil to get rid of any residue.

#03: No long term benefits: No doubt silicone makes your skin feel soft as a feather, however, it does not contribute much to the health of your skin in the long term. While it does help smoothen rough and dry patches and locks in moisture, these benefits are pretty much washed off once you wash your face.
