How to keep the skin breakout-free and healthy during your period

As women, I think we can all agree that periods are the absolute worst. And it's not just the constant bleeding or the bloating or the tumultuous mood swings we have to deal with; it’s also the pesky period skin that accompanies the agony. A common issue experienced by most (if not all) women, 'period skin' refers to the pimples, hormonal acne, dullness and oiliness one experiences right before, during, or even after menstruation.

And even though it may feel like our hormones are wreaking havoc on our skin, there are actually a few easy ways to combat period skin problems. Ahead, we're listing 'em down, so take notes.

01. Stay hydrated

05. Work out

Okay, hear us out — you should be staying hydrated is important skincare advice during any time of the month, but it's especially important during that time of the month. Not only will it help you maintain a healthy glow, but it will also help you decrease water retention, take care of your bloating, and even help with your cramps.

02. Eat healthy

05. Work out

One of the best things you can do to combat period skin? Cut the carbs and refined sugars, and instead focus on your veggies and fruits. We know it's hard — being deprived of sugar during your period can turn us into raging monsters, too — but avoiding sugary, carb-heavy foods and switching to greens can help keep your skin supple and glowing during this time.

03. Turn to salicylic acid cleansers

05. Work out

If you notice your skin getting extremely oily or is more prone to acne during your period, it's time to switch to a salicylic acid cleanser. Salicylic acid helps remove excess oil from your skin and will help prevent breakouts too. You incorporate one in your daily skincare routine or simply swap it with your regular cleanser in the week leading up to your period. We recommend the Dermalogica Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash to purify the skin of all impurities. It contains salicylic acid, tea tree oil, lavender, and orange peel, all of which work to clear out breakouts, soothe the skin, and revive it.

04. Use a sunscreen

05. Work out

Not so fun fact: PMS-ing can actually make your skin more sensitive to the sun. To combat this, make sure you lather sunscreen, whether you’re indoors or outdoors, to shield your skin from UV rays. Our go-to is the Lakmé Sun Expert Tinted Sunscreen 50+++ SPF. It offers broad-spectrum protection and will also give your skin decent coverage to make it appear smooth and even.

05. Work out

05. Work out

Yes, we know — when you're on your period, you're all about the Netflix-marathon, stay-in-bed-all-day life. But is it going to help with maintaining a healthy complexion? We're sad to report that the answer is a big ‘no’. Working out and staying active — even if it's just going for a walk — can help you maintain healthy skin all through your periods while alleviating the pain caused by cramps and helping with bloating. See? It all works out!
