There are a number of reasons why your skin turns dry and itchy in winter. Cold air and drop in humidity can rob your skin of essential hydration, leading to dryness. Outdoor activities like working out, and indoor factors like heaters can also contribute to dryness. This further leads to tired skin that is unable to shed dead skin cells, leading to clogging of pores and sweat glands. If your skin is prone to dryness and irritation in the winter, here are some tips to help remedy that safely…
- 01. Keep your skin clean at all times
- 02. Use a lightweight lotion to moisturise
- 03. Don’t forget to tend to your body
- 04. Don’t skip sunscreen
- 05. Steer clear of woollen fabrics
01. Keep your skin clean at all times

Do not spend too much time sitting in your sweaty outside or workout clothes. Excessive exposure to sweat can exacerbate the dryness and tendency to itch. Shower with a gentle face wash and body cleanser to avoid stripping it of too much moisture, which harsh soaps can do. Avoid using hot water showers as they can strip your skin of moisture.

02. Use a lightweight lotion to moisturise

If your skin tends to get clogged and itchy too often, it is best to stick to a routine and products that are lightweight, non-comedogenic and let your skin breathe. Use a gel or water-based moisturiser to hydrate your skin in the winter, aim for re-application every time it feels even a little bit dry. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalene, panthenol and aloe vera, to name a few.

03. Don’t forget to tend to your body

Your facial skin isn’t the only one that needs TLC. Tend to your body skin by combining nourishing and exfoliating formulas that will avoid clogging up your skin. Look for gentle yet effective exfoliants like lactic acid in your lotions. They help keep your pores clean and avoid issues like itchy bumps and ingrown hair.

04. Don’t skip sunscreen

No matter what the season, skipping sunscreen is a big no-no! Sunscreen does more protecting your skin from UV exposure. Sun damage can also lead to issues like patchiness, tanning, redness and tender skin. To avoid having to deal with the itchy and dry skin waiting for you post damage, apply a broad-spectrum sunblock 30 minutes before stepping out into the sun.

05. Steer clear of woollen fabrics

While woollen fabrics are sought-after in winters due to their thickness and warmth, they’re also super itchy and can dry out the skin. Look for skin-friendly fabrics like cotton, leather, faux fur and fleece to keep yourself warm sans irritation. If you do plan on wearing woollen fabrics, layer a light cotton fit underneath to keep itchiness at bay.
