Should you wear mascara on your bottom lashes? We investigate

Inner beauty is great, but a little mascara never hurt.

If mascara is your secret weapon to look wide awake every single morning, well, you’re not alone *wink wink*. It’s great how a few coats of mascara can instantly lift your eyes and give you a doe-eyed look. And that’s not all! Mascara also has the power to define your bold, edgy eye makeup. Whether you’re wearing glitter, shimmer or any bright, solid hue on your lids, finishing your eye makeup off with some mascara ties the whole look together.

While mascara is the wonder tool in every girl’s vanity kit, there’s one question we all battle with each time we reach for our tube of mascara. Once you’ve applied generous coats of mascara on the upper lashes, should you or should you not apply it on the bottom lashes? If you find yourself battling this situation every morning, then you’re in for a treat. Because we are going to end this battle for you once and for all!

Here’s why you should NOT apply mascara on your lower lashes:

In the 60s, lower lash makeup was big! It increased the depth and size of the eyes instantly. So, back then, anyone who applied mascara on their upper lashes didn’t bat an eyelid before swiping some mascara through their lower lashes. With so many vintage beauty trends making a comeback (looking at you overlined lips and smokey eye sans eyeliner), applying mascara on the lower lashes is something that can amp up your makeup game. We’re all born with two sets of eyelashes—upper and lower. Defining the upper and going completely bare with the lower could make it look unnatural. Enhancing both the sets equally will make your eye makeup look more proportionate. If you’re wearing eyeliner, eyeshadow, and mascara on the upper lashes, then it’s best to define your lower lashes too, so as to balance that heavy eye makeup look. Also, mascara on the lower lashes works when you want to give your lower lids a slightly highlighted effect.

Now, if you’ve been keeping a close watch on divas like Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Bella Hadid’s beauty game, you’d notice that they go sans mascara on their bottom lashes almost always. Reason being, lash staple underneath your eye can make you look older and at the same time, draw attention to under-eye imperfections such as dark circles, pigmentation and crow’s feet *ouch*. So, if you’re going in with mascara on your bottom lashes without any concealer, it could be a terrible idea!

So, now that you know the upsides and downsides of wearing mascara on your lower lashes, you can decide for yourself!
