A FASHION BLOGGER ON WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE AT NEW YORK FASHION WEEK
From street style to runway collections, Fashion Weeks are the most anticipated events of the year. Naturally then, it’s like the holy grail of events for a fashion blogger like me. So when I was invited to attend New York Fashion Week this year, my excitement levels were at an all-time high. I did everything I could to make the most of this opportunity; from choosing the right wardrobe to spotting some of the biggest beauty and fashion trends that would dominate the fashion scenario through the year. Here’s a low down of my experience at the coveted NYFW…

Outfit dilemma

When you’re attending one of the world’s most watched Fashion Weeks , the first question that comes to your mind is “What should I wear?” It is a daunting task to select an outfit for the shows because let’s face it—everyone is dressed to perfection from head to toe. And to top it all, the weather in New York city brutally challenges you further. How do you wear your best outfit when it’s freezing? Well, you can't! So my plan B was to wear an outfit that would be warm, cosy, chic and comfortable.

The key is to wear multiple layers and that's exactly what I did. I layered on my Zara shirt with a Forever 21 sweater and paired it with my colorful rainbow-like skirt from Milly. I also wore two layers of tights to keep my legs from freezing and topped it all with a Max & Co. coat. I am not an 'all-in' kind of person when it comes to dressing and I usually let one piece at a time do the talking and for this outfit, I let the skirt steal the spotlight.

Favourite shows

Of all the New York Fashion Week designers, it was the Sachin & Babi presentation that stole my heart. Everything about the presentation was reminiscent of the Victorian era. The collection was absolutely breathtaking. Even better was the way it was presented—a gorgeous venue that had a vintage vibe, a violinist on the side and the models showcasing the clothes with effortless elegance. If you have a big party coming up, this is the collection you should take cues from!

Trend-spotting

Jewel toned color palettes and rock ‘n’ roll seemed to be the dominating theme for NYFW this year. Designer houses like Coach, DVF, Sachin & Babi, Area, John Paul Ataker, Jay Godfrey and Emily Saunders all showcased collections with a similar theme. Another very visible trend, not in fashion but in beauty, was the bold lip coupled with a soft, almost no-make visage. Models rocked bright and bold lip colors, the makeup felt natural and seemed devoid of heavy bronzers or smokey eyes.

When it comes to Fashion Week, how can we miss street style? Well, in my opinion, the street-style stars from New York city deserve a special applause because they keep the show going despite the freezing temperatures. I kid you not, the weather was harsh—it’s a Herculean task posing for photographers because you somehow want to reach for your cab that would drop you to a comforting hotel room. I saw a lot of faux fur, sequined outfits, oxblood lips and dangling statement earrings through street style. Needless to say, all of this made for one helluva sight on the streets of New York.
