What’s in store for us this time at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2015?
I’m so excited to be bringing to you a show on Lakmé 9to5 Insta Light! It’s a new product and am really looking forward to showcasing this time. I’ve taken all the key points about the product and tried to incorporate that into my collection. So my collection is iridescent, there’s a lot of shine to it, etc. Basically, everything is in sync with this product.
Who is this collection dedicated to?
Well, there are women across geography that are drawn to a certain aesthetic and have a certain taste. She may be in Delhi, Mumbai, Paris, Nagpur or even Amritsar but she has a certain aesthetic sense. So my collection is for all such women around the world.
Is there a strong sense of competition amongst designers every time Fashion Week draws close?
I think by now I’ve reached a point in my life where I compete only with myself. I want to keep evolving and bettering myself with every show I do. Every Fashion Week means concentrating on myself and seeing what I can do to elevate my show. If you ask me, I don’t think me or my contemporaries are in that space to compete anymore.
Your work always has a sensual touch to it. The Namrata Joshipura girl has the courage to take risks and is yet, very subtly sexy. Is your collection going to reflect the same vibe even at the upcoming Fashion Week?
You know every designer has his or her own DNA. We all come from a certain school of thought and you can never take that away from us. You just kind of rework on it season after season and refresh it but the vibe, by and large, remains the same.
What’s the biggest challenge of showcasing at Fashion Week?
Without a doubt, it’s a challenge to produce a show that you have conceptualised in your mind. Execution is the greatest challenge when you do any Fashion Week. You have to understand that it’s not just the designer. It’s the production team, models, makeup artists, etc. all of who need to come together and have a common vision. Everyone needs to work in the same direction and that’s a huge task when you’re trying to pull off a show.
Lastly, are there any international designers who inspire you?
I have so many! I like Dries van Noten and Marc Jacobs a lot. I also really love the kind of work Raf Simons is doing at Dior.
