In an era where fashion is digitally consumed and machine manufactured, it’s always refreshing to chance upon something handmade and reinterpreted from the past. In a time where precious crafts are being lost in the steady stream of mass production, we loved Translate, a brand that produces handwoven Ikat.

Owned and founded by Vinita Passary, the reason behind the emergence of Hyderabad-based Translate was to revive the lost art of Ikat. Ikat is a fabric made using the decorative technique in which warp or weft threads are tie-dyed before weaving. “This was our way of providing a platform to the Ikat weavers and craftsmen from Pochampally,” said Kanchan, the stall manager on the day we visisted.

India, Japan and many South-East Asian nations such as Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand have weaving cultures with long histories of Ikat production.

What do they offer?
The brand has succeeded in creating Ikat printed kurtas, scarfs, comfy pants that are now coming back on the style front and are easy to wear in cotton and silk-blended forms. Translate’s Ikat silk sarees are their USP and if you want to brave the heat, you definitely want to get your hands on these.

Their specialty?
Ikat in all tie-dye colours, printed on wrap jackets, scarfs, sarees, kurtas and Hakama pants (Japanese pants originally worn by men, but now by women too) can be found here. Our favourite pick of the lot was a red Ikat dress, a must-have that flatters every body type.

And the cost?
The kurtas start from 3,500 and the scarfs from 1,800 onwards. You can also find unique wrap jackets and frock tops starting from 4,500.
