Be Beautiful: Tell us about your new collection ‘Siyah.’
Priyanka Modi: Our new collection is called ‘Siyah’ which means black. We are big believers of simplicity and our new collection reflects our love for the same. Inspired by the era of the Mughals and Islam, we made sure each of our garments had clean lines and architectural cuts. We have also incorporated the art of Hoshiarpur (Punjab) like the blackwood seesha and indle craft to make the garments more interesting and unique.
BB: When it comes to a versatile wardrobe, what are the kinds of clothes and accessories one should own?
PM: Your wardrobe should be all about wearable fashion. Most people tend to lay focus on the tops rather than the bottoms. To look insanely stylish, I always advise everyone to look for as many stylish bottoms as possible. Key pieces are narrow pants, contemporary dhotis, drape pants and palazzos. Your upper wear can be flexible; pair a basic white shirt with drape pants or long skirts and you are all ready to make a style statement.
BB: With schedules becoming hectic by the day, women are always on the lookout for transitional desk to dusk pieces. What are your recommendations for the same?
PM: A cape shirt works fantastic for work and post-work affairs. Team it with palazzos or a long skirt to look effortlessly put together. Another piece I suggest is a boyfriend jacket that you can throw on just about anything to look instantly presentable.
BB: What are the comfortable best pairings one can go for the upcoming festive season?
PM: The modern woman needs to upgrade her wardrobe constantly. For example, replacing an embellished skirt with a printed one, going for tunic lengths instead of floor lengths and so on. As far as your pairings are concerned, go for more unexpected combos like a dhoti paired with a tunic and waist coat instead of anarkali kurta for a fusion look.
BB: Lastly, which are your 3 favourite pieces from your collection ‘Siyah’?
PM: We have never presented saris at any of our shows. But this time we showcased one in an ivory black organza with a full sleeve blouse in delicate black embroidery and black diamonds. Another one that’s my favourite is again the pre-stitched sari in red with minimal embroidery detailing with a red peplum blouse that could be layered as a jacket. With this piece, you will see how a red-on-red works as beautifully while exuding a pure festive feel. And the last piece that’s my favourite is the architectural Mughal Jali Shirt Jacket that comes with a pair of twin pants. It has an interesting twist with a structured front and a fluid back and could be worn as coordinates or separates for just about any occasion.
