What does love really entail? Here's a guide to decoding matters of the heart.

The dating game, like all things ‘modern’, demands instant gratification - like WhatsApp, for instance. Although I’ve been told the application is now obsolete. SnapChat is the word of the hour. Under such circumstances, well thought of text messages come as a welcome surprise. ‘Course hand written letters are an urban myth – much like coffee dates and walks along the beach. If it weren't for loud music and alcohol, the art of conversation would be also be extinct.

Chances are you’re not in a relationship right now. But there is somebody lurking in the periphery of consciousness. You’ve seen them a handful of times already – perhaps, even in the after hour. But you’re not ready to commit to anything. ‘It’s Complicated’, is a perfectly normal state to be in. And ‘feelings’ is the dirtiest of the F-words.

So what, in essence, does romance really mean? The Oxford dictionary defines it as: conducive to or characterized by the expression of love. Would you then, as romcoms would have you believe, look upon grand, over-the-top gestures as the ultimate expression of this emotion?

To be fair, I do love everything romantic movies stand for – the stolen glances, the slow dances, the ferris wheel rides against the backdrop of fairy lights and the proposals made over rings in champagne glasses – especially the champagne glasses. But I believe that they do not define romance. Rather they come as the accessories of a fulfilling relationship.

What then is the act of love? Value people, I say, and what they bring into your life. Make place for the people you love. Because it is not too often that the world sends them your way. To quote Jake Gyllenhaal in Love & Other Drugs, ‘You meet thousands of people and none of them touch you. And then you meet one person and your life is changed forever.’

In matters of love, the debate of the heart and mind is obsolete. The mind has no business to be here. Listen to your intuition and take a chance. And you will find yourself in the most unexpected of places. As the lovely Tina Fey (30 Rock) says, ‘My New Year’s resolutions is to say “yes!” Yes to love, yes to life, yes to staying in more!" ‘Course clause #3 only applies to you if you've made your way through the first one.

So pick up the phone. Write that note. Take the next flight. Say the three words. Pop the question. Act upon whatever it is that you've been holding back. Or simply land up announced, cheesecake (box not slice) and bottle of champagne in hand, to revel in the bliss of staying in all day and listening to them talk.

And if, unlike me, you are not musically challenged, I suggest you strum the guitar as you enter - in an appallingly charming manner as displayed by Ashton Kutcher in A Lot Like Love. Background Score: Brighter Than Sunshine. If this makes me a romantic, so be it. And romanticism is not a dirty word.
