What exactly are shellac nails?

Similar to gel nail polishes, shellac manicure system is a multi-step process that involves the use of a base coat, colour polish and finally a topcoat. All of these layers are treated and cured with UV light to make them last longer, appear glossier and prevent chipping.
How long do shellac nail polishes last?

Shellac nail polishes have a slightly thinner formula as compared to a traditional gel polish because it mixes equal parts gel polish and equal parts your traditional nail polish. Therefore, the usual time that a shellac manicure would last is about two weeks. But if you take proper care of your nails, this polish can last for as long as a month. However, just like gel nails, after about two weeks, you could start noticing gaps between the polish and your cuticles. This is because of your natural nail growth cycle and will require you to get a touch-up done in case you want to wear the same colour for a longer time.
Is this different from nail extensions?

Shellac nails cannot be used to extend or strengthen your nails since it has a thinner consistency. It is gentler on your natural nails as compared to the products and chemicals used to apply acrylic nail extensions.
What about the removal process?

Like everything else, we are going to advise you to head to the salon for a safe and problem-free removal. Your normal nail polish remover will be ineffective when it comes to removing shellac nail polish.
Are shellac nails safe for me?

While there is nothing wrong with the polish as it is just a mixture of regular and gel polish, it is the exposure to UV light that could be damaging to your skin. Extended exposure to LED light lamp could cause age spots and cancer. It is advisable to apply a good quality sunscreen of at least SPF 30 PA+++ on your hands. Alternatively, you could also wear rubber gloves with the nail area cut out for ultimate protection.
How do I care for my nails during and after shellac nails?

Do not try to buff or scrape the polish off as this could damage your nails as well as the cuticles. Therefore, other than visiting a salon for safe removal, we suggest you buy a cuticle oil to give your nails and cuticles all the care and nurturing they deserve.
