Catch them young…Thinning eyebrows, caked makeup and maroon lips on 22 year olds should no longer catch anyone by surprise. Irrespective of what age bracket you fall into, one thing you’ve got to take notice of is the age at which young women across metros and mini metros are getting themselves salon appointments for facials, skin treatments and other beauty paraphernalia of the not-so-natural kind. Who’s to blame? Pop culture? Our growing emphasis on beauty? The need to conform to stands of beauty set by others? It’s anyone’s guess.
Developing a dependence…
There’s no simpler way to put it – the younger you start the more regularly you’ll need to visit the salon. Isn’t that the same reason why our mothers asked us to wait a while before we got our first wax or did our eyebrows for the first time? And oh, how we wish we had listened. Your skin is quite impressionable and can build a dependency on skin treatments if you’re pumping it with products way too early and way too often. Instead, invest your time in building a customised beauty routine for your skin and side by the multani mitti and herbal remedies of yore every time you feel the need for some extra pampering.
Keeping it natural …
While home facials might not be all that bad, it actually depends on the content of what you’re allowing your skin technician to apply on your face. Opt for something that’s all natural such as a seasonal fruit scrub. Papaya, strawberry or even peppermint arethe more popular fruit treatments best suited for all skin types. Chemical peels on the other hand are a not-too-safe category unless you’re willing to take a big skin risk, the effects of which can be rather long lasting. Why not keep those reserved for when your skin really needs them, which is definitely not at age 20 plus?
From the expert…
Makeup and beauty expert Swarnalekha Gupta says, “I have noticed that youngsters are increasingly opting for facials thinking that they can instantly achieve glowing, healthy and fair skin without any major side effects, which is not always the case. A lot of people don’t know that facials are meant to offer temporary relief from skin issues like dryness, pigmentation and so on. Youngsters particularly aren’t aware of the fact that if they resort to facials frequently especially with the purpose of instant glow or fairness, it may eventually give rise to skin problems at a later age. So instead, I always tell them to give more importance to their daily skin care measures such as cleansing, toning, moisturising, scrubs, using good SPF, and may be at times, indulge in peels or microdermabrasion by qualified dermatologists. Getting a facial done once in a while is fine but one shouldn’t make it a part of their beauty regime so early. Instead, focus on internal cleansing by drinking adequate water, eating healthy, avoiding oily food, including fruits and greens in their diet. After all, our face and skin is a reflection of our health and internal well-being.”
