With a menu that promises to entice gastronomes, dining at Café Mangii’s fine-dining off-shoot, Le Mangii was indeed a treat. Their à la carte menu boasts exotic pastas, risottos, an impressive range of aromatic soups, delectable grills, sinful desserts and of course, their pride and glory, the signature hand-crafted Napolitana wood-fired oven pizzas.

Founder Prashant Chaudhri let us in on a secret—each and every oven the chain uses across the city is his brainchild, built by his team rather than imported from Italy, like most other fine-dining joints do.

The night kicked off with a range of appetisers starting with a slice of their Verdure pizza containing a delectable blend of peppers, zucchini, caramelised onions and sun-dried tomatoes. This was followed by their Sautéed Mushroom and Spinach pizza which was deliciously peppered with truffle-scented Rucola. We finished this course with my personal favourite—the Mediterranean with sun-dried tomatoes, capers, Kalamata olives and fresh basil and a slice of their Peri Peri Chicken pizza.

To take a breather from our pizza palate, we were served Cherve stuffed mushrooms with sweet and tangy barbeque sauce, olive bruschetta, grilled Halloumi wrapped in aubergine carpaccio with paw paw molasses and beetroot, as well as Calamari Fritti with homemade garlic mayo and king prawns marinated with Cajun spices and grilled in a butter-garlic sauce.

Stuffed as we were from this spread of pizzas and appetisers alike, we had to make room for entrees. In between sips of one of the best red wine Sangria’s I’ve been privy to in the city (packed with a burst of pomegranate seeds), we picked our mains.

We opted for the Chicken Roulade stuffed with spinach, ricotta and olive, garlic mash and red wine jus. The dish wasn’t bad by any stretch of imagination but it would have been better if the meat was a tad bit tenderer and more flavourful. Not quite a win, but not entirely a miss either. For that touch of sweetness, we ended our meal with a blueberry cheesecake. This one rates better than average and we were quite content with the generous serving of blueberry compote to go along with the cheesecake.

With its fabulous, commercial location, we’re sure Le Mangii is set to make its mark and with a venue that so easily lends itself to a bustling after-hours scene, we’re certain this is the spot we’re going to be hitting up for some cocktails, casual chatter and hearty laughs.
