5 bold n beautiful, iconic magazine covers from across the decades
‘The Times They Are A-Changin'…’ may be a Bob Dylan song but it is in sync with what is happening to our magazine publishing industry today. As our magazines stand on the brink fearing extinction, we think now is as good a time as any to dig into the archives and bring to fore some timeless bold and beautiful Indian magazine covers that will outlive their times. Here are our favourites:

Kiran Rao

Parveen Babi – 1976

First generation of Hindi cinema's glam icons, Parveen Babi was the first Indian movie star to feature on the cover of the Time magazine in 1976. Titled Asia’s frenetic film scene, Babi is clearly far ahead of her times on the iconic cover.

Kiran Rao

Sharmila Tagore – 1966

Here is another first. Legend has it that Sharmila Tagore is India’s first actress to don a bikini for a magazine cover. Back in 1966, Tagore created quite a hullabaloo when she appeared on the Filmfare cover looking ravishing in a monochrome bikini.

Kiran Rao

Meena Kumari – 1972

At the risk of being accused of using clichés, we are going to refer to this one as the 'Golden age of Bollywood' kind of cover. Poised and classy, Meena Kumari appeared posthumously on the 05 issue of Filmfare in 1972, two months after her death. A tribute to the movie legend, the cover reads, ‘A star is dead’.

Kiran Rao

Mandira Bedi 2007

More recently for the April 2007 issue of Maxim, Mandira Bedi sizzled in a Golden bikini with a jacket and loosely held pants. The racy cover and photo shoot attracted a lot of attention and also sparked off a controversy, not so much for her attire but for the Ek Onkar (God is one) tattoo, she sported near her navel.

Kiran Rao - 2014

Elle India unveiled their August 2014 cover on an unconventional note. This to us is a one-of-its-kind magazine cover for the fact that it makes a powerful and stunning statement without much-a-do on the glam quotient. Sporting a pink jacket with Fendi eye wear, Rao made a style statement of her own for Elle’s Geek Issue.
