We’ve all been made to believe that it’s quite picture perfect – standing in the rain with your arms stretched out wide and the rain running down your face and your hair. Everything about that picture might be ‘delightful’ except that your hair probably hates it. The truth is that the monsoon is a terrible time for your tresses. Here’s what you can do to care for them better during these wet months…
 

Steer clear of the rain

As fun and romantic as getting wet in the rain looks, your hair isn’t partaking in your enthusiasm. If you’re living in a metro like us, there’s a lot more than comes down with the rain such as starters, dust, toxins, pollution, all of which have been hanging in the air as particles. Allow these to settle into your hair and get ready to welcome a dry, itchy and infected scalp. A hooded windcheater, a thick scarf or an umbrella can help defend your locks.

 

Dry it out

Invest more time in drying your hair. In May, we probably wouldn’t even think about bringing out our hair dryers, thanks to the toaster of a summer that we’re blessed with. But when it comes to the monsoon, towel drying is not enough. With the moisture levels at an all-time high, damp hair can easily latch on to impurities and become a breeding ground for hair infections. Plus, don’t forget that nasty flu that’ll be doing the rounds anyway and worsen if you’re walking around with wet hair.

 

Minimise the styling

Monsoons are a hard time for your hair as it is. So you’ll only be making it worse if you continue with your regular ritual of hair products.The humidity and moisture tend to make your hair quite heavy so instead, go minimal for the monsoon. If you’re going to lather your locks with product every morning, you’re subjecting it to more weight than it can handle.

 

Invest in some hair TLC

Like we mentioned, give your hair all the TLC it requires by upping your dose of head massages and deep conditioning rituals. Opt for every mum’s fave pampering ritual - the old school champi- at least once a week (if you’re lucky, you can actually get your mum to give you one) or splurge on a deep conditioning treatment at your nearest salon. While at home, don’t forget the conditioner every time you shower.

 

Get a crop

If you’ve been hesitant to get a short crop all along, here’s your big chance. Take it from us, the longer your hair, the more the investment of time and energy in caring for it in the rainy season, especially when your hair tends to shed a lot more in the monsoon than in other months. With the pixie, the bob and the lob being all the rage this season, we’re suggesting you opt for those instead of clearing your floor and pillow of all those strands of hair you’re going to be losing.

At the end of the day, no matter how much you work out, or how much care you take of yourself, if your immune system isn’t in top form you’re going to catch the bug. This goes for lifestyle illnesses as much as it does for skin and scalp infections. Therefore, nourish your hair from the scalp till the tip by eating a diet that rich in protein, minerals and vitamins.
